Southeasterlies have dominated the weather patterns this week and QCL anglers have explored the whole fishing grounds as a result. Cape Edenshaw has been less productive than the western waters, yielding the odd Chinook and Coho along with good numbers of Lingcod & Halibut. Ralph Ettles managed to find a 32 pound Tyee over there today but the best action was found around Parker Point and Bird Rock 1. Shane Foster picked up a 41 pound beauty fishing with guide Gord Parkes at Parker Point this morning while Gary Cooper led his friend Mike Densky to an impressive 43 pound Tyee which he boated after an exciting fight in choppy easterly seas. Edson Egbert landed one of those legendary northern Coho weighing 17 pounds today, an exciting catch to be sure. While a few Chinooks are being caught in deeper waters offshore the bulk of them are still being found down around 55 feet in the traditional areas close to the kelp & the rocks. Herring, both cut plug and teaser-headed, are the bait of choice. Anglers who choose to go for action rather than Tyees are finding good success fishing down 25 feet in 150 feet of water with both weighted rods and riggers. Coho are still coming in a whole range of sizes but once you find the schools, you'll have steady action as long as you can stick with them. They're hitting everything from cut plugs and anchovy/flasher combos to spoons.
We're looking at some more strong southeasterly wind for Thursday & Friday before the weather shifts to moderate southwest for Saturday & Sunday. Tides will slack right off to only a 4 to 6 foot shift by Sunday so QCL anglers should plan for nice smooth waters by then. The temperatures are cooling off somewhat by now and we expect mainly cloudy skies and highs of about 17 degrees.
