Moderate southerly seas have kept water conditions comfortable and the fishing effort well distributed throughout the grounds this week. Lodge guests have been finding the full mixed bag with Chinooks from 15 to 50-plus pounds, Coho from 6 to 10 and a few nice bright Chum to 20 pounds. Driftwood angler Colin Smith landed a nice 53 pound Tyee Thursday with his son Thomas on the net, to become the first 2010 member of the 50 Pounder Club. They picked that one up on the slack tide at Klashwun Point. Congratulations guys! Friday saw lots of salmon come to the boat with many fish under 20 pounds being released. Veteran QCL anglers John Tammen and Mike Wenzinger quickly found their stride on Friday, boating 30, 34 and 42 pound Tyees on the first day! QCL guide Raiden Bresch opted to go east to Cape Edenshaw and found a beautiful 42 pound Chinook for guest Justin Ginetz. Perennial QCL guest Dean McCann got a surprise fishing for Chinook at Klashwun Point when a big Halibut took his herring and after a long, tough battle on his salmon rod, Dean boated a barn door weighing 123 pounds! You never know whats going to happen out there! Wet drizzly conditions on Saturday didnt hold anyone back with lots of Tyee pins presented again at dinner. Highlights were a 42 pound Tyee for Jonathan Rubenstein and a 46 for Eric Oeltjen.
Anglers have been sharing the salmon bounty with a number of Orcas who have made the rounds through the past few days picking up their share of salmon, sometimes taking them right off the lines of shocked fishermen. Although most of the Orca we get around here are primarily hunting for seals and other mammals we do see the salmon-hunting pods of orca occasionally. Fortunately theres lots of salmon to go around!
The weather forecast for this week sees the light to moderate southerly system continue with relatively calm seas all around; mainly cloudy skies with showers through Thursday and temperatures in the low teens. Tides have peaked this weekend so we ll see more moderate changes as the week goes on. |
