August 20th Report Posted By QCL - Wed Aug 20th, 2008 - Filed under: General ![]() We got to experience the full range of Charlottes' weather this week with a good old 40-50 knot Southeaster on Tuesday followed by beautiful glassy waters Wednesday. The fishing action is still holding steady, however, particularly during the slack tide periods this week. Green Point has been the favourite fishing spot, dishing up the full menu of Chinooks, Coho, Pinks, Lingcod and Halibut. You just never know what's going to take your bait. Tracy Ducharme boated a 41 pound Tyee Wednesday with guide Dave Yaeger while Alex McDonell opted to release a perfect big Chinook that was taped out to 44 pounds by guide Greg Ettles. Fishmaster Keith Burdette joined the ranks of the 50 Pounder Club, releasing a beautiful Tyee that scored 56 pounds. Way to go you guys! Dave Harrison boated a big 70 pound Halibut this week, fishing with his son and QCL guide Sam Harrison out off Eagle Rock. While the current weather continues to be very fair the forecast for the weekend sees a Southeasterly returning for Friday before swinging to Southwest for the balance. Clouds and showers will once again be the norm. The tides are currently easing off after peaking midweek so anglers can anticipate steadier fish activity throughout the day. - Comments (0) |
August 16th Report Posted By QCL - Sat Aug 16th, 2008 - Filed under: General ![]() QCL guests continue to enjoy some of the best fishing of the season with strong catches in all species. Tyee-class Chinooks are being taken throughout the grounds with Cape Edenshaw, Parker and Green Points still the favoured destinations. Fishing off the kelp beds at depths of 35 - 50 feet with herring or anchovies is still the most productive tactic. The Coho are in thick right now and we're seeing the larger fish we expect in August with 10 pound averages and good numbers of 12-16 pounders boated daily. These big Silvers are truly the princes of the salmon, providing some of the most exciting angling to be found anywhere. They're being found at all depths throughout the fishing grounds but the top half of the 100 foot depth seems to hold the bulk of the fish. Halibut catches are stellar as well these days with lots of nice chickens coming in and a few 35 - 45 pounders taken each trip. The tides are peaking Monday so we'll see moderating tidal action through the upcoming week and longer slack periods. The weather forecast is calling for southeasterlies to return this week so we won't expect to see the sun for a few days again! - Comments (0) |
August 10th Report Posted By QCL - Sun Aug 10th, 2008 - Filed under: General ![]() The Tyee bell continues to ring frequently on the QCL dock these days with good solid Chinook action showing up at some point every day. Green and Klashwun Points have been the hot spots, accounting for much of the total catch - both Chinook and Coho. Herring and anchovies are producing well when fished down at depths of 35 - 45 feet. The surface water temperatures have come back up above 50 degrees F again and the feeding activity has risen accordingly. Lots of big fish are in the mix still with several mid-30 to mid-40 pounders landed. The newest members of the QCL 50-Pounder Club are both Driftwood anglers - benefiting from that extra time on the fishing grounds! Sano Stante boated a nice bright 50-pounder on Monday while Dan Stante weighed in a 53 today. Congratulations guys! Lodge guests were thrilled this weekend with the presence of hockey legends Bobby Hull and Richard Brodeur, sharing the best kind of quality time together out on the water. Head guide Greg Ettles kept them busy with lots of great salmon action, including 6 Tyees - two of them over forty! The hockey greats enjoyed the lodge environment as well, sharing stories and making time for all of us who hearken back to the glory days of the great game. The weather picture this week doesn't look quite so bright with strong southeasterlies predicted and some liquid sunshine to go with it. Tides have been minimal lately so the water will be moving a little more every day through the week. - Comments (0) |
August 6th Report Posted By QCL - Wed Aug 6th, 2008 - Filed under: General ![]() The Chinook action this week has been best during "bite" periods in the 2 hours leading up to slack tides, both on the morning low and the afternoon high. Green Point, Parker Point and Bird Rock 2 have produced most of the fish with cut plugs at depths of 35 - 45 feet. Coho are showing up in pockets on both the east and west sides of the grounds, ususally down 30 ft. in about 100 ft. of water. The Tyee Club is growing steadily with good numbers of fish in the low 30's taken. Fewer really big fish have been found in the last couple of days but Willie Pless landed a nice 42 on Monday and Greg Veer boated an big Chinook weighing 54 lb. on Tuesday, both with guide Nathan Rayment at Green Point. Wednesday saw Kerry Curtis releasing a beautiful big Chinook which taped out to 55.5 pounds with guide MacGregor Anderson at Parker Point. Great job guys! With the westerlies many people haven't been halibut fishing but they're being found consistently in the usual places at around 170 - 220 feet. The weather is swinging around to southeast for the weekend so our days of big blue skies are over for now. Showers and temperatures around 15 degrees will be the norm. The tides will settle right back to only about a 4 to 5 foot swing so longer slack times should even out the salmon action throughout the day. - Comments (0) |
August 2nd Report Posted By QCL - Sat Aug 2nd, 2008 - Filed under: General ![]() QCL anglers are enjoying fine summer weather these days with calm seas, fair winds from the west and even a good measure of sunshine. Fishing action has been spread throughout the grounds with Cape Edenshaw, Bird 2 and Green Point providing lots of excitement. Huge tides with 15 foot swings are dictating much of the timing with the slack periods producing the bulk of the Chinook catch. Highlights this weekend have been the release of a couple of big Tyees - Don Triggs landed a big Chinook which taped out to 42 lb. at Bird 2 with guide Kevin Clough while Tim Watson sent back a nice 44 pounder with guide Sean Hart. Great fish guys! A number of smaller Springs, 15-18 pounds, are spicing up the mix this week with the more common 25 to 30's. Coho seem to have moved offshore some and fewer are being taken in close. Chinooks are being found mostly around the 35-45 foot depths and cut plug herring are still most productive. Halibut fishing remains steady in water depths of 170 - 240 feet. The forecast is for a ridge of high pressure off the west coast Chalottes to produce a few days of clear skies and moderate westerlies. We haven't seen much of that this summer so it will certainly be well received! The tides have peaked over the weekend and their moderation will certainly help the fishing chances. - Comments (0) |
July 30th Report Posted By QCL - Wed Jul 30th, 2008 - Filed under: General ![]() Big tides this week have dictated much of the fishing success with fairly slow action during the moving water but some great bites around the slack. While Coho, Lingcod and Halibut have been keeping anglers occupied between the tides, the big Chinook that are lurking along the kelp beds are what keeps them out there all day long! Cohos are being picked up everywhere while the Springs are being found tight to the kelp or down around 40-60 feet. Cut plug herring is the bait of choice right now for these big Chinook. A high proportion of the current Chinook catch are big fish over 30 pounds and the Tyee pin presentation is a big event each night in the dining room. Jason Harry released a big Spring measuring 41 pounds on Tuesday while Jeffrey Brukardt, Rance Smith and Randy Meinhold kept 44, 47 and 54 pounders respectively. On Wednesday the Chinook fishing heated up through the late afternoon and by the end of the day another long list of new Tyee Club members was drafted. Notable were a 40 pounder released by Jeffrey Brukardt, a 46 released by Gary Eatinger and a 47 released by Derrick Amerson. The newest member of the 50 Pounder Club is Robert Peel who boated a 50 at Klashwun Pt. in the afternoon. That's great fishing guys! Thanks especially for choosing to release those fish over 40 pounds - big fish breed big fish! The forecast for the weekend is looking very promising with light Northwesterlies, temperatures around 16 degrees (warm for us this summer!) and some sunshine! (also a novelty!) The tides are peaking however with 16 foot swings daily through the weekend, like fishing in a huge river! Those slack times will no doubt be critical. We're looking forward to it! - Comments (0) |
July 28th Report Posted By QCL - Mon Jul 28th, 2008 - Filed under: General ![]() Sunday provided the best day of fishing for the Kingfisher Derby with perfect sea & sky conditions. The Chinook fishing improved noticeably with a significant increase in the total number taken. Bird Rock 1 and Klashwun Point yielded up the big fish again today while Green point provided the most Coho action. Bobby Vermette started things off mid-morning, releasing a powerful Chinook that taped out to 45 pounds at Klashwun Point. The point turned up another huge fish later in the day when Justin Reitz hooked and landed a big Tyee weighing in at 55 pounds. Bird Rock 1 was the key, however, when veteran QCL angler Jim Goodrow hooked a big Chinook off the rock at mid day. Fortunately the giant fish hauled Jim out away from the kelp and all the other boats where he eventually brought it to the net. Fishing buddy Jay Koetje scooped it and then passed the prize over to the awaiting weighmasters. After a quick doublecheck on the measurements and a few photos, the big salmon was carefully returned to the water by QCL derby official Roger Baker, where it revived quickly and swam off. The big Chinook, which measured out to 64.17 pounds, held on for the remainder of the day to claim the big fish prize of $50000. Congratulations Jim! Great fishing and thanks for letting that big one go! - Comments (0) |
July 27th Report Posted By QCL - Sun Jul 27th, 2008 - Filed under: General ![]() Day 2 of the Kingfisher Derby began with a totally awesome sunrise and that oily smooth water that's so nice to be out on. While many anglers were busy catching lots of Coho and Halibut at Cape Edenshaw and Green Pt. the focused Chinook hunters targeted the waters off Bird 1, Parker Point, Bird 2 and Klashwun Point. For much of the day the Chinook fishing was very slow with occasional fish picked up at one point or another. While a number of twenty-somethings and a few Tyees were boated the big news was the rise of a new name on top of the leaderboard as Colin Ramsden boated a big Chinook that taped out to 49.82 pounds. As the final day of the derby opens Sunday, the weather is forecast to be as pleasant as today so everyone's looking forward to a great finale. Keep an eye on this page for the final results! - Comments (0) |
July 26th Report Posted By QCL - Sat Jul 26th, 2008 - Filed under: General ![]() The 6th Annual Kingfisher Derby kicked off in style Friday with Paul Clough & Operations Manager John Sedo greeting arriving participants in matching tuxes and ties. Along with the QCL Fishing Challenge the 2 derbies have all lodge guests fishing "old-school" with weighted rods only in hopes of catching the largest salmon & halibut for the top prize money. Taking the lead after the first day's fishing is Brian Kask Jr. with guide Greg Ettles, releasing a big Tyee scoring 44.37 pounds at Klashwun Pt. Clay Fuller follows with a nice Spring scoring 33.61 pounds from Parker Point. Shannon Burns and Cheri Goller share the 3rd spot with Chinooks scoring 30.5 pounds. Top halibut Friday was picked up mooching for salmon by Sean O'Connor and weighed 31.5 pounds. After a soggy start yesterday with a rolling southeasterly sea, guests should enjoy a pleasant day today with light southwesterlies and mixed Charlottes skies. Stay tuned for todays results. - Comments (0) |
July 23rd Report Posted By QCL - Wed Jul 23rd, 2008 - Filed under: General ![]() It must be Derby week here in Naden Harbour because the fish have certainly arrived. Keen anglers will be here Friday for QCL's 6th Annual Kingfisher Derby, a catch & release weekend that sees participants hoping to send back the largest Chinook for the $50000 grand prize. This year we're introducing the QCL Fishing Challenge over the same weekend which offers prize money for both released and kept fish. The key for both derbies is that they're weighted rods only, no downriggers. This week we've seen a lot of big fish show up with several 50 lb-plus Tyees landed. Doug Evasiuk joined the Kingfisher Club with a 60 pound beauty on Tuesday while John Klimkeiwicz released a big Spring which taped out at 42 pounds. Wednesday saw 4 new members for the 50 Pounder Club with Alan Schill and Chris Rule each boating even 50's. Joel Gonzales turned back a 52 lb. beauty with guide Kevin Clough while Scott Falcone and guide Dave Eng released a perfect 54 pounder. Fantastic fishing guys and thanks especially for letting those big fish ones go! Lots of Tyees in the mix with some great Coho fishing has made for an exciting month so far. The weekend weather is calling for moderate southwesterlies with showers so it's real fishing weather coming up! The tides will be moderate with swings of only about 7 feet each day. Look forward to reports on the derbies' results! - Comments (0) |
