Last week at the Lodge, Mark Kasumovich – QCL Guide & Sales Representative – guided a wonderful individual into a battle with the largest salmon of his life, a 45lb Chinook. The most fulfilling moment of guest Doug Weis’s career ensued moments after he slipped the net around his fish and swung it into the boat. He turned to his son and guide Mark, and with a tear-stained eye he said that it was one of the happiest days of his life! Doug and Justin, you came to the Lodge as friends but you left as family! We hope to see you both up again sometime very soon.

The sunshine has hit Queen Charlotte Lodge, and with it has come some great fishing. The average size of Chinook is going up, and we have seen a lot of great fish hit the dock. On Monday Bill Coss brought a 56 lb Chinook in, which is now the largest salmon of the season! He picked it up at Yachts Bay on a green spoon. The green Tiger Prawn Spoons have been proven time after time this season and helped bring in a multiple 50s’ now – always a popular choice with the guides and guests! In addition to Springs, we are starting to get the odd Coho in, getting up to 10 lb’s in size which is a great indication for what the coming weeks should bring.

All of our regular spots have been producing fish, but Klash and Parker Point have been proving to be particularly hot spots. Although there are fish all day, the most productive times to get out there is early morning, and at the end of the day when more consistent numbers of the fish seem to be getting caught.

Halibut fishing has continued to stay strong, with 15-20 lber’s coming in regularly, and a few over 30. We have seen guests picking up great Hali trolling for salmon over the past two days in the 12-18 lb range.

If you’re looking to top up your box don’t forget to go for a few black bombers and lingcod for a tasty treat! We have been seeing more lingcod and rockfish and the dock lately and are a great way to increase the amount of fish you are going home with!

Back at the Bellringer, the drinks are flowing, the music is playing and guests are having a great time after a long day on the water. The kelp bongs are scheduled to make an appearance any day now, but if that’s not your style there are plenty of options and tasty treats to help warm up.  The playful competition between friends and thrill of the day’s catch all adds up to a great time on the dock!

Big fish have arrived!

We have seen some great fishing this past week. Early on, we saw a SuperPod of Orca cruise through our fishing grounds. Though seeing these amazing animals can mean that fishing will slow down for a period of time, they are chasing and feeding on big Chinook Salmon. After they passed through, we witnessed some huge fish coming in to the dock after every day of fishing. This week we saw many Chinook over 30 pounds, fish in the 40’s, and two fish in the 50’s! The monsters are around and everyone seems to be hooking into high numbers of fish ranging between 15 and 25 pounds along the way. Many of our guests have been catching over 20 fish in a day, coming home to the Lodge with smiles and stories that last through the night – until they can get back out and search again for that fish of a lifetime! We are all happy to see these big fish showing up, and we have been experiencing some great weather along the way.

Our Kingfisher Derby is coming this weekend for Father’s Day, so stay tuned for some great fishing updates to come! Tight lines everyone!

There is a bit of a buzz around that this is shaping up to be a big year for big fish… could be true! We’re certainly seeing lots of promise in 2013 so far! With several fish in the fifties caught in June we had our first indication that it might be an exceptional season. Nate Schwartz’s 66 pounder on June 25th got us pretty excited and now we’ve seen our second over-60 this summer.

Neil Lassesen and Paul Bell were fishing self-guided in 200 feet of water off Shag Rock yesterday, doing pretty well on feeder Chinooks, when Neil’s rod dipped hard off the rigger at the 80 foot depth. Neil jumped to the rod and tightened up just as Paul’s rod tip came to life. Double header. Paul made short work of his fish which turned out to be a pink salmon but Neil wasn’t playing a pink! He was into a serious battle with a heavy fish which stayed down deep and had the Islander reel working hard. When the big salmon first showed on the surface they got a glimpse of the broad tail and they knew this was one of “those fish” that most anglers wait a lifetime for.

A moderate northwesterly sea added to the challenge but eventually the guys brought the salmon and the boat close enough together to let Paul slip the net under the gleaming chrome Chinook. Since they knew all along that this fish was going back they were prepared and quickly had it measured, photographed and back in the water. It took both men to support the huge salmon alongside the boat as it eventually regained its strength. When the strong kick of the tail told them it was ready, they watched in wonder as it swam away from the boat and returned on its journey to the spawning gravel of its home stream. The calculations determined that this salmon was around 63 pounds and had a girth of 32 inches! What a beautiful specimen and thanks guys for letting it go! Just so happens Neil was celebrating his birthday too so what a present to receive! Congratulations Neil on joining the very exclusive Kingfisher Club at Queen Charlotte Lodge!

Our guests are raving about the newly renovated MV Driftwood as she anchors right on the fishing grounds providing great service and comforts to QCL anglers throughout their stay. We’ve made a number of changes to the vessel to create a place where all guests can come aboard and take a break, enjoy a delicious and varied lunch service, restock on bait and tackle and compare fishing stories with newfound friends.

We’ve set up a new grill on the lower deck and enclosed the whole upper deck with window curtains to provide the ultimate floating terrace diner right at Bird Rock 2! We call it “The Hook” and you’ll know why after you visit. You sure can’t beat the view, with frequent hunting raids on the gull colony by the resident eagles and regular siting’s of bears and whales, it’s truly a unique lunchtime experience.
Be sure and spend some time at The Hook when you’re up fishing this summer!

“Canada Week” is still going strong at QCL where we host an annual private fishing derby full of festivities, good times and great fishing. The weather has continued to be especially pleasant with glassy calm seas and morning sunrise skies that just leave you speechless.

The weekend wrapped up with a strong finish on Sunday – lots of nice Tyee-class Chinooks, a bunch of those “perfect-size” halibut and loads of feisty coho in the 6-8 pound class for the light tackle crowd. Our 50 Pounder Club continues to grow as long-time Driftwood – QCL angler Dick Weber boated an awesome 53 pounder at Bird 2 with his guide Nick Mercer. (Chalk another one up for the Green & Glow Coyote spoon!) Several nice fish in the 30’s came to the scale and Tim Delesalle turned back a nice one that taped out to 33 pounds – good job Tim! Bill Mazurie landed a 41 lb halibut while Robert Rand boated a 53 and Reagan Sandberg arrived at the dock with an impressive 60 pounder. You’ll need a cookbook!

Through the week we’ve seen the tides determine much of the most active periods and QCL anglers have enjoyed flurries of excitement at Cape Naden and Parker Point in particular. Parker produced the newest member of the 50 Pounder Club when John Medd and his brother Norm trolled by there on the way back to the lodge on Tuesday evening. A silver torpedo smashed his plug-cut herring at 35 feet and kept on going. But after a 30 minute battle Norm managed to get the net under it and John’s 51 pounder was in the boat. Heading right back to the dock, the celebrations began and the Bell Ringer was a hive of laughter and story telling… the perfect end to an awesome day.

The variety of catch is as wide as the favoured methods of chasing them. Some anglers are using herring while others are having the best success with anchovies. Green-combination spoons of all sizes are working very well for both Chinooks and cohos and you never have to worry about losing your bait on a strike!

Looking ahead to the weekend we’re anticipating some classic summer northwesterlies, bringing big blue skies and bright sunshine along with moderate seas from Shag Rock on down to Cape Naden. With the Driftwood tucked neatly behind Bird Rock 2, QCL guests enjoy lots of productive fishing all along the western shoreline. The tides have moderated and we’ll see changes during the fishing days of 6 to 10 feet. Bring sunscreen!
