Being surrounded by wilderness as far as the eye can see is certainly one the first realizations to occur! As you spend time in that environment you tune in to all the life that’s around you. Of course there’s the big stuff like humpback whales and black bears but you’ll also discover that the ocean is teeming with life, the birds are everywhere and the forest maintains a timeless presence. Soak it up!
These cold north Pacific waters provide an incredible setting to witness the web of life in action. Vast amounts of plankton feed huge volumes of small fish which feed great populations of salmon, cod, halibut and other fish who fall prey to seals, eagles and humans! In the midst of all this are the whales, mostly humpback and orca, with occasional appearances by grey and Minke, that are totally captivating with their presence. Being around the whales, watching them feed and interact, is something that we never get tired of!
As a prominent stop on the Pacific migration flyway and a major habitat for seabirds, the coast of Haida Gwaii provides excellent opportunities to observe large numbers and wide varieties of bird life. Along the ocean shoreline you’ll find prolific feeding activity of seabirds, often in large flocks, as they dip and dive for marine life. If you take some time to quietly explore the forest margins you’ll find seasonal songbirds as well as residents. Whether you prefer binoculars or a camera you’re sure to be busy with all that’s around you!
